25NHX1NHX1 is an integral membrane protein that shares homology with other proteins containing a sodium hydrogen exchanger domain involved in transporting sodium and hydrogen ions across the concentration gradient between a cell and its surroundings. Functioning as an antiporter for sodium and hydrogen ions, the exchange function characteristic of this domain is highly dependent on pH. Although the exact molecular mechanisms responsible for this behavior are not well understood, a prominent current inference is that these exchanger proteins use ATP to transport ions across membranes.
